Q Answers · Working together

What does a Shopify agency actually do, and do I need one?

A Shopify studio takes a brand from strategy to a live, fast, custom storefront — and, if the business needs it, the custom software around it. That is the difference from buying a theme: a theme gives you a layout, a studio gives you a system built around how your business actually sells.

You probably do not need one if you are validating a first product and a good theme will do. You probably do once the storefront is the constraint on growth rather than the product.

Theme, freelancer, or studio?

OptionYou getRight when
Premium themeA layout and settings you configure yourself.Launching, validating, or budget is the binding constraint.
FreelancerOne person's skill set, usually deep in one discipline.A defined task: a feature, a fix, a section.
StudioStrategy, design, development and optimisation as one accountable team. The storefront itself is limiting growth, or the build spans disciplines.

There is no prestige in over-buying. If a theme solves it, buy the theme.

What a studio engagement should include

  • Discovery before design. A prioritised roadmap of what will move the business, produced before anyone opens a design tool.
  • Design as a system, not a picture. Reusable components your team can recombine, so page five does not need a designer.
  • Hand-written code. A custom theme should be lighter than the template it replaced, not heavier.
  • Performance as a deliverable. Core Web Vitals measured before and after, with a page-weight budget in the spec.
  • Documented handoff. Your team should be able to run the store without calling the agency for routine changes.
  • Full ownership. You own the code and the store, and can take both elsewhere.

What GooGoGoGo does

GooGoGoGo is an independent Shopify studio working with consumer brands worldwide, in any language. Four disciplines: strategy, design, custom development, and CRO and growth.

Two things distinguish it from most studios of its size:

  • It builds Shopify apps, not only themes. When a workflow has no public app, the studio builds one — OAuth, embedded admin, webhooks, hosted backend — rather than routing you to a workaround.
  • Multi-language and multi-region work is routine, including regional store setups and the geo-routing behind them.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a custom Shopify store cost?

It is set by scope rather than by a list price: catalogue size, how much custom functionality is involved, whether content and migration are included, and how many languages or markets are in play. Any studio quoting a number before understanding those is guessing. Scope comes out of a discovery pass.

How long does a custom Shopify build take?

It is driven by scope and by how quickly content and decisions arrive from your side. Content is the most common cause of delay, not development.

Do I own the code?

You should, and with GooGoGoGo you do. Ask any agency this before starting, because some retain the theme or keep functionality inside an app you must keep paying for.

Can you work with our existing theme instead of rebuilding?

Often yes. If the theme is well built and the problems are specific, improving it is usually better value than a rebuild. A rebuild is worth it when the existing theme is the thing holding performance or design back.

Do you work with brands outside your own country?

Yes. The studio works remotely with brands worldwide and ships storefronts in any language.

What happens after launch?

Handoff includes documentation so your team can run day-to-day changes. Ongoing optimisation and growth work is available but not compulsory — you should not need an agency to change a banner.
