Can a shopping assistant actually read your products?
A machine reading your store without rendering it gets two things: /products.json and whatever structured data is already in the served HTML. We read both and tell you, product handle by product handle, which attributes are empty. We do not know which URLs any particular assistant fetches or how it ranks anything — nobody outside those companies does — so this report stays on what is present and what is missing.
Based on publicly available data only. Informational, not legal advice.
What this checks
- Whether your public product feed (/products.json) can be read at all
- Titles past the 150 characters Google Merchant Center documents for the title attribute, or written as keyword lists
- Descriptions that are empty, under 100 characters (our floor, not a published standard), or still carrying Microsoft Word paste markup
- Empty product_type, vendor and tags — the only category and brand fields the public feed carries
- Variants with no SKU, and shippable variants recorded as 0 g
- Structured data on the product pages we sample: Product schema, brand, offers, GTIN/MPN
- Real multi-value variants still sitting under an option literally named “Title”
FAQ
Do I have to connect my store or install an app?
No. Everything in this report comes from URLs anyone can open in a browser: /products.json and up to two of your product pages. We never ask for a token and could not use one if you offered it.
Why do some rows say “could not tell”?
Four real limits. (1) The public product feed has no barcode/GTIN field and normally no image alt text — reading those from your own store needs the Admin API and your credentials. (2) We do not run JavaScript, so structured data injected by an app after page load is not in what we read, and not in what any client that does not render reads either. (3) We read at most 500 products (two requests of 250) and at most two product pages; when the last page comes back full we say there may be more rather than pretending we saw the rest. (4) Nothing here measures how an assistant ranks anything — that happens inside other companies' systems, where we have no visibility at all.
If I fill all of this in, will AI assistants recommend my store?
We do not know, and anyone who tells you they do is guessing. What we can say is narrower and checkable by you: right now these fields are empty, and a machine reading your store only gets the fields that are there. Filling them is housekeeping with a known cost and an unknown payoff — we would rather say that than sell you a ranking claim we cannot back.
