Shopify theme rebuild, redesign & migration
Most Shopify stores do not need a new theme; they need the one they have to stop fighting them. The honest question is rebuild or refine: a theme that is structurally wrong for the catalogue gets rebuilt, one that is merely dated gets refined. Either way the work has to keep rankings, keep the apps that matter, and leave the team able to edit without a developer.
GooGoGoGo rebuilds and migrates Shopify themes: purchased themes rebuilt section by section to a design, migrations to Online Store 2.0 and to Horizon, and themes built from scratch when a base would only get in the way. Six of the client stores on this site are rebuilds or from-scratch builds you can open.

What a rebuild has to get right
A rebuild is judged on what it does not break as much as on what it improves.
- Rebuild versus refine, decided honestly. Structural problems — a layout that cannot express the catalogue, sections that cannot be reordered — justify a rebuild. Everything else is a refine.
- Rankings kept. URLs, titles, structured data and internal links preserved or redirected one to one; a rebuild that drops 20% of organic traffic is a failure with a nice homepage.
- Apps sorted, not just carried. Every app on the old theme is either integrated properly into the new one or retired. App sprawl is where rebuilds get slow.
- Editability for the team. Sections, blocks and settings that let marketing run campaigns and homepage changes without a developer.
- Performance as an outcome. A rebuild is the one chance to remove the accumulated weight. Core Web Vitals should be better after, on real phones.
- A phone layout designed as such. If the rebuild does not fix mobile, it did not fix the store.
How we build it
We work from the design file and the catalogue outward, and we test against the old store rather than against a blank page.
- Purchased themes rebuilt to a design. ParanCrafts’ Ella theme was rebuilt with purpose-made sections and an independent phone layout; llano’s Focal theme gained custom sections and a desktop layout that scales as one unit.
- From scratch when a base gets in the way. Material Kitchen’s theme was written from scratch with no Theme Store base — a two-level shop panel and per-item colour pickers that no base theme offered.
- Migrations to OS 2.0 and Horizon. UMI&UMI runs a customised Horizon storefront in four languages; older stores are migrated to Online Store 2.0 section architecture so every page becomes editable.
- A pre-launch QA pass against the old store. URLs, redirects, structured data, apps, checkout and analytics checked before the switch, with a rollback plan.
- A first concept before any deposit. You see the design direction before committing to the rebuild.

If the theme is fine and the store is merely due a refresh, a refine — new sections, better product pages, a performance pass — costs a fraction and lands sooner. We recommend the smaller job whenever it is the right one.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know whether to rebuild or refine my theme?
Rebuild when the theme’s structure cannot express what you sell — variants, sets, catalogue scale, regions. Refine when the structure is right and the presentation is dated. We assess this on the first call and have written the rule of thumb up in the journal.
Will a rebuild affect our search rankings?
Not if it is done carefully: URLs kept or redirected one to one, titles and structured data preserved, internal links intact. We check the old store against the new one before launch.
Can you migrate us to Online Store 2.0 or Horizon?
Yes. OS 2.0 section architecture makes every page editable; Horizon is Shopify’s newest framework and we have shipped a customised Horizon storefront for UMI&UMI.
What happens to our apps during a rebuild?
Each app is either integrated properly into the new theme or retired. A rebuild is the right moment to remove the ones that only add weight.
What does a theme rebuild cost?
A section-by-section rebuild of a purchased theme usually sits in the $1.5k–4k band; a from-scratch theme with strategy and design at $4k+; a refine in $500–1.5k. Scope is set before build.
How long does a rebuild take?
A focused rebuild typically lands in a few weeks; from-scratch builds longer, depending on catalogue and markets. You get a scoped timeline on the first call, and a first concept before any deposit.
